Someone help me out. I am out of town and have not talked with anyone about the game last night. How did the area athletes do?

East 38
West 31.

West blew and 11 point lead to the East. Not sure of how all the locals done but Chris Robinson from CW had an interception inside the 5 to help the West D.

A game that looked to be an offensive battle after one quarter held true to form Friday night at Darling Stadium in Hampton as the East outlasted the West 38-31 in the highest scoring All-Star game in VHSCA history. Both teams featured big time plays from future college stars on both sides of the ball, but it was the offensive stars that took center stage.

East quarterbacks Adam Morgan (Dinwiddie, pictured right) and Josh Bailey (Clover Hill) threw two touchdowns apiece in earning the co-offensive MVP award for the East squad who battled back from a eleven point deficit in the third quarter to pull out the victory while Logan Thomas (Brookville) paced the West scoring by throwing for one touchdown and running for a second while DaeQuan Scott (R.E. Lee-Staunton, pictured below right) led the squad's attack with one electrifying run after another including the first score for the blue team.

The East opened the scoring with the first drive of the game as Morgan led the red team on an 11-play 80-yard drive concluding with a short touchdown pass to Chris Smith (Clover Hill, pictured below left) giving the East a 7-0 advantage. On their very next drive the East got a 40-yard field goal from Jared Brown (Grafton) pushing the East lead to 10-0.

The West answered with their own long drive by moving the ball 80 yards on eleven plays ending with a 6-yard run from Scott to make the score 10-7. After the teams exchanged punts, Thomas hit Brett Holman (Floyd County) with a 21-yard scoring strike off of a reverse run to give the West a 14-10 advantage which they held through the first half.

Thomas and the West opened the second half with another scoring drive as he snuck his way in from the one-yard line on the sixth play of an 81-yard drive to increase the West squad's lead to 21-10. The two teams traded touchdowns as Morgan hit Devontae Atkins (James Monroe) on a quick slant which the speedy AA standout turned into a twisting, juking 57-yard score which was answered by the West who responded with a 9-play, 68-yard drive capped by a Luke Harris to Brett Holman two-yard scoring pass as the two Floyd County stars hooked up making the score 28-17.

But the East returned the favor in closing out the scoring for an explosive third quarter when Josh Bailey (Clover Hill) connected with Antone Exum (Deep Run) on a 23-yard touchdown capping a 9-play, 73-yard drive making the score 28-24 entering the fourth quarter.

The West used a 22-yard field goal from Cody Journell (Giles) to push their lead to 31-24 as the two squads combined to score on the first five possessions of the second half.

The West appeared to have the game in hand when Chris Robinson (Clintwood) picked off a Morgan pass on the West 4-yard line but the subsequent drive stalled forcing a punt. Four plays later, Bailey rolled right and found Tavon Gatlin (Green Run) wide open behind the defense for a 44-yard score tying the game at 31-all with 6:33 to play.

On the very next play, a hook and lateral attempt was bobbled and popped straight up into the air where Kenny Fryman (Hanover) picked in clean and returned it 22 yards for an East score capping the scoring for the night.

A late West drive was snuffed by Exum who rose above two other players to make a potential game-saving interception.

The defensive MVP's for the game were Tyrel Wilson (East, Hampton) and Trey Garvey (West, Woodbridge).
